Lean LaunchPad

USTAR Lean LaunchPad® (LLP)

The USTAR Lean LaunchPad® (LLP) program offers Utah-based technology startup companies and research teams from Utah not-for-profit universities and colleges training and mentoring to establish product market fit for technologies and increase competitiveness for private and public funding. Technologies should align with USTAR’s targeted industry sectors.

Pilot Cohort

Up to six research teams consisting of three members each (team must include members with a technical, business and marketing focus) will be selected from applicants to go through the 8-week course with an expert faculty member teaching the LLP curriculum. A mentor will be assigned to each team.

Teams will have the following requirements:

  • Attend and actively participate in the 3-4-hour class each week for the duration of the 8-week course
  • Conduct 10-15 customer discovery interviews each week
  • Prepare and deliver a 5 minute presentation of lessons learned as part of weekly coursework
  • Record and report progress and interviews weekly in the database provided
  • While there is no fee to participate in the pilot cohort, teams are expected to complete the full program
  • Selected participants will be required to comply with USTAR reporting requirements for a period of 5 years

The cohort will begin Friday, April 28 and continue each Friday, with the last class on Friday, June 23.  Classes will be held 12:30 – 4:00 p.m. at the Miller Campus of Salt Lake Community College in Sandy, Utah.  Team members are required to be in attendance and participate throughout the cohort.

Teams who successfully complete the course will receive access to services to create a professional 2-minute video telling their story as part of the final presentation on June 23.

Eligibility

All teams must consist of three members, a technical lead, a business lead and a marketing lead. See application for more detail. Technologies must be between a TRL of 2-4.

Note on eligibility: university teams eligible for the I-Corps programs at University of Utah or Brigham Young University, or the TVC Lean Launchpad program are not eligible for USTAR LLP.

Application Process

Teams should complete the application form, which includes uploading a completed business model canvas and petal diagram (templates are available under downloads). If proprietary information is included with your application, a GRAMA form should be completed and uploaded (form is available under downloads). Once submitted, confirmation screen will indicate your application was received.

Evaluation

A panel of LLP mentors, government staff and/or LLP instructors will review applications using the USTAR Lean LaunchPad Scoring Rubric. An initial screen will be conducted by USTAR staff to ensure applicants meet the eligibility criteria. Top applicants will be selected to interview for the opportunity to join the pilot cohort.

Contact Information

Questions regarding LLP must be submitted in writing via email to USTAR@utah.gov. Inquiries made via any other method will not be accepted. In the interest of assuring fairness, all frequently asked questions and answers will be posted under LLP Questions on the USTAR website
