A technology incubator is a place for startups to physically locate in one place among a variety of other companies. A technology incubator differs from a business incubator in that a technology incubator provides state-of-the-art space and high-tech equipment that can be used by all clients. Peers, industry experts, and established entrepreneurs may provide science and technology mentorship and guidance to get the company to its desired next level.
USTAR operates two technology incubators – a Life Science Incubator in partnership with Granite School District (USTAR BioInnovations Gateway) in South Salt Lake and the USTAR Innovation Center in Clearfield Utah, which is focused on aerospace/defense, advanced materials, composites, software, hardware, and outdoor product sectors. Both incubators are specifically focused on science and technology early stage start-ups in areas such as R&D, proof of concept, prototyping, product validation, product development, mentoring and networking with federal, university and private partners, as well as federal and private funding sources and grant programs.
SBIR-STTR Assistance Center
Utah’s technology-oriented businesses have a distinct advantage in advancing their research and development with non-dilutive federal Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) funds through USTAR’s SBIR-STTR Assistance Center (SSAC).
USTAR’s SSAC is a statewide resource providing qualified Utah businesses assistance and insights into all the elements of the SBIR-STTR process. The SBIR and STTR programs are the largest source of seed funding with over $2.5 billion dollars invested annually. An act of Congress, the highly competitive program is dedicated to supporting the development of technology by small businesses across the nation.
USTAR’s Satellite Offices work with entrepreneurs, innovators, university tech transfer offices, community partners, government agencies, and educational institutions to assist with the acceleration and commercialization of technologies in Utah. The offices located in Orem and St. George act as connection points for the science and technology community away from the Wasatch Front and work to connect entrepreneurs and innovators with statewide resources.
